Italy Probes Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir Over Flotilla Detainee Abuse

(MENAFN) Italian prosecutors have opened a formal criminal investigation targeting Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over his conduct toward activists from a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla held in detention, a news agency reported Monday.

The probe, spearheaded by the Rome Prosecutor's Office, centers specifically on Ben-Gvir's behavior toward detainees held at the Port of Ashdod with their hands bound behind their backs.

Investigators are simultaneously scrutinizing the broader actions of Israeli authorities throughout the boarding and detention operation, which ensnared several Italian nationals among the activists.

Prosecutors are reportedly weighing a range of serious allegations, including claims of torture and kidnapping.

This latest inquiry follows a separate investigation already opened by Rome prosecutors into the detention of Italian nationals during Israel's interception of a Gaza aid flotilla in international waters off Greece in April — a probe triggered by three formal complaints.

The most recent Israeli intervention targeted the Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla in international waters in mid-May. Live footage broadcast directly from the vessels captured Israeli naval forces as they moved in to intercept the ships.

A video subsequently released by Israeli authorities showed Ben-Gvir moving through rows of kneeling, zip-tied detainees packed tightly together — images that ignited a wave of international condemnation.

Ben-Gvir was seen in the footage brandishing an Israeli flag and taunting those in custody. All detained activists were ultimately freed following sustained global pressure.
